From local specialities to international cuisine, Bangkok poses as the perfect playground for foodies to unite over great food and drink. A testament to this was seen earlier this year, seen in the vociferous reactions to the authorities laying out plans to abolish the country’s iconic street food in the interest of hygiene, safety and order.
Whether you are looking for a casual or a decadent Thai food experience, we take a look at two favourites that provide two vastly different experiences to quell the most discerning of taste buds:
A vibrant mix of flavours
The Thais have every reason to be extremely proud of their heritage rich cuisine. Their meticulous food preparation process leads to the birth of dishes doused tastefully in fish sauce, coconut milk, chillies, basil and lemongrass spices that makes up the distinctive flavours that have become associated with their cuisine.
Bo Lan
Your trip to Bangkok would be incomplete without a visit to Sukhumvit’s Bo Lan. The venue serves a la carte offerings for lunch and a fixed set menu only for dinner service.
The menu changes quarterly to excite palates and Bo Lan curates its menu based on fresh and available seasonal produce – sourced both from local farmers as well as grown on site.

Soul Food Mahanakorn
Marketed to the public as a destination for Thai comfort food at affordable prices, this expat owned Thong Lor gem provides diners with local favourites in a casual setting, leaving one’s wallet relatively intact.
The restaurant exudes a vibrant Bangkok night market vibe with an urban feel that comes across as anything but pretentious. The interior’s streetscape collages were the brainchild of the restaurant founder Jarrett Wrisley himself and designed exclusively by famous Thai artist Pariwat Anatachinam.
The extensive menu that includes the usual Thai desserts requires one to either arrive with a hearty appetite or in numbers to justify a healthy order. As with many Thai restaurants, a good list of locally inspired cocktails with equally colourful names compliment the food aptly.
